Pershore Golf Society - Who are we?
Where else do you want to go? Fixtures Results Doubles KO Singles KO Reports Front page Standings
How did it start? - The society was formed in 1994 by a group of occasional golfers as a mechanism to increase their golf without necessarily being members of any individual club.
How does it run? - The Society is still to this day administered by a small committee that meets regularly every few months at the Angel Inn and Posting House in Pershore. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend as the society is run by the members for the members with the emphasis on good golf and social events, good camaraderie and above all good fun (see the committee page).
What does it do? - The Society sets up a range of golf days from simple 18 holes to 27 holes days out with venue locations from Wales to Bristol, local courses and anywhere in between but members often have favorites that are visited regularly (see the fixtures page). Day formats also vary from bacon butties and coffee or lunch to all day and evening dinner but always aimed as much at the social aspect as at the golf.
How many days out does it have and what does this include? - Core fixtures remain at the four Summer days out but the calendar now includes almost year round golf with Winter and Summer midweek days along with Singles and Doubles KO competitions. And other activities such as golfer/non-golfer days and a cricket day (see fixtures page). Pershore Golf Society and The Crown Golf Society from Kempsey have formed strong links with an end of season 'Ryder Cup' style match play event taking place each October. For Pershore members qualification for this event is through a points system for places on each day out from 10 points for the winner to 1 point for simply being there. The Doubles and Singles KO's also carry points for each round successfully negotiated. The top eight players and two wild cards join the Captain and Vice Captain for the match against Kempsey. Another end of season event is the Angel Cup. Sponsored by Juan Mendez of the Angel Inn and Posting House in Pershore this is an invitational for those who have managed a top three finish on any of the days out or won through to the Singles or Doubles semi finals. The other competition is the Champion of Champions which is a best 5 from 7 scores from events over the season. This one has a habit of throwing up unexpected results and rewards consistency rather than one off wonder rounds.
How many members are there? - Today, membership is around forty and the Society continues to flourish. Membership of the English Golf Union allowed handicaps to be administered properly and the membership continues to grow.
Does it go anywhere else? - The society has played in the international arena in 1997 hosting their first international match against The Royal Amicable Golf Club, Anderlecht at Cleeve Cloud Golf Club in Gloucestershire. A return fixture was organised for the following year as a coach load headed to Belgium. And has also had a summer golf weekend break to Cornwall (1998 & 1999), Scotland (2003) and Devon (2006). Connections were also established with Pershore's twin towns of Bad Neustadt and Plouay and small party of members and guests traveled to Neustadt for a match in 2001 under the supervision of Groupenfuher John Nutman with a view to Pershore hosting a 3-team contest 2002, with The Angel Hotel hosting our French and German friends.
